Dnipro city mayor Boris Filatov has made an unexpected statement at the Forum “From Kruty to Brussels. We are going our way” which was held in Kyiv. The mayor proposed to legalize gambling industry in Ukraine, arguing that the present-day fight against the illegal slot machines and lotto halls is ineffective.
“The ban on gambling in Ukraine failed and turned into a corrupt feeder for law enforcement and members of the parliament. Dnipro and all the cities of Ukraine are filled with lotto and gambling halls,” the mayor said.
Boris Filatov suggested allowing the local authorities to regulate the gaming business. According to the official, it is time for the government to recognize that the ban on gambling in Ukraine did not result in anything good. Illegal gambling clubs operate everywhere and it is impossible to close them. The best solution, in his opinion, is to legalize the industry.
“It is necessary to give the local communities the opportunity to regulate gambling business. And only we, together with our fellow countrymen, will determine the balance,” Boris Filatov added.
In the framework of the Forum, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko announced his decision to run for president for the second time. Presidential elections will be held in Ukraine on 31 March 2019
