Poland – The arrested 43-year-old can pay up to 1.5 million fines

Tomaszów Police force secured 17 illegal gambling machines. The 43-year-old Tomaszów resident heard allegations from the penal fiscal code and he was temporarily arrested.

Officers from the department to fight against economic crime and corruption of the Tomaszów unit detained 3 people who are suspected of organizing gambling on illegal machines. The policemen patiently and diligently worked on this matter.

At the beginning of June 2018, based on the material collected in the case, they arrested the first suspects. According to previous findings, a 43-year-old resident of Tomaszów Mazowiecki in a single-family house and one of the basements of a tenement house in the city center has found rooms for illegal business. Suspected to protect the business from law enforcement authorities, he equipped the premises with monitoring, electronic locks and gaming machines, and also hired appropriate service staff in them.

Such treatments were to allow for “carefree” business. Nothing could be more misleading, as police officers scrupulously collected evidence in this matter about criminal activity. Their findings indicated that it lasted from November 2017. On June 3rd 2018, officers entered the “illegal” casinos, defeating the installed technical protections.

Disclosed and secured a total of 17 slot machines. Having them in such a quantity results in a fine imposed by the local Tax Office in the amount of PLN 170,000. Police officers detained a total of 7 people. Two Tomaszów residents aged 59 and 64 heard allegations from the penal fiscal code. On June 5th 2018, a 43-year-old resident of Tomaszów Mazowiecki was temporarily arrested for illegal gambling. The offense is punishable by up to 4.5 years imprisonment and a fine of up to PLN 1.5 million. Investigators predict further detentions in this matter.

Let us remind, that from April 1st 2017, new amendments to the Gambling Act came into force. The amendment to the Act introduced significant legal changes. The catalog of people who can be punished with fines has expanded. Also, the amount increased from PLN 12,000 per device to PLN 100,000 – both for the organizer of the game and owner of the device. Private entities may not arrange slot machine games outside game casinos. This means a ban on having gaming machines (apart from the exceptions indicated in the Act).
