Russia to fight illegal bookmakers via test purchases

Russian Federal Tax Service (FTS) is about to get permission to place bets in order to collect evidence about illegal bookies. The corresponding bill was developed by the government. The State Duma plans to consider it in the first reading by the end of May. The goal is to empower the Federal Tax Service to identify the organizers of lotteries and bookmakers online.

Tax officials have been keeping a list of illegal gambling organizers since 2017. The news about allowing Federal Tax Service employees to make test purchases was first reported in March 2018 — such amendments were prepared by the Ministry of Finance.

In total, 29 companies have betting license in Russia and 16 of them accept bets online. The number may soon change, because bookmakers will be banned in some regions of Russia on June 2.
