Ukraine plans to legalize gambling business by the end of 2019, and Russian bookies look forward for new opportunities. According to Darina DENISOVA, president of the Russian Association of Bookmakers, some Russian companies will try to enter the Ukrainian market, if gambling is legalized.
“I hope the new bill will consider legalization of all types of gambling. This would be a failure, inadequate and unreasonably one-sided decision if only casinos will be regulated. Detailing and subsequent regulation should affect all segments of gambling, including bookmaking. Otherwise, it will be a profanation of such a right initiative,” Denisova said in an interview for Betting Business Russia.
Many well-known betting brands operating in the CIS come from Ukraine, like PariMatch, Marathon and Favbet. According to Denisova, if about ten or more bookmaker licenses can be issued promptly after legalization.
However, the expert also noted that there are too many political nuances, which make it harder for Russian companies to enter Ukrainian market. Still, nothing is impossible and a lot also depends on the political will of the new leaders of Ukraine. If they think about funding the state treasury, then the entry of Russian betting brands into Ukraine is quite real.
