Fight against illegal gambling escalates in Odessa

Ukraine’s Attorney General Yuriy Lutsenko said that police will intensify fight against illegal construction, gambling and other shadow enrichment schemes in Odessa.

Odessa is the third most populous city of Ukraine and a major tourism center, seaport and transportation hub located on the northwestern shore of the Black Sea.

“The task has been set to check the legality of the operations of the gambling business in Odessa with the help police units from other regions. The checking will be total, not selective,” said Lutsenko. “Because, unfortunately, recent inspections with community activists have shown that they want to check only selected gambling establishments. All gambling establishments that do not have a license will be closed and their equipment withdrawn. ”

Inspired by the recent visit of Ukraine’s Internal Affairs Minister to Odessa, police has already closed 5 illegal casinos. Police seized 42 units of computer equipment, funds obtained from illegal activities, as well as other items.

“The illegal gambling establishments operated  as lottery distributors,” the press service of the prosecutor of the Odessa region reports.

Deputies of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine are not satisfied with the work of the police in the fight against illegal casinos. Ukraine’s budget has lost about $ 2 billion due to the ban on gambling, experts say.
